How weighting changes the average
An exponential moving average gives greater weight to more recent prices while retaining a declining influence from earlier observations. This often makes it respond faster than a simple average with a comparable period. Initialization and calculation conventions can create small differences between chart systems. Confirm the period, input and data history before interpreting a disagreement between two displayed EMA values as a market signal.
Responsiveness has a cost
A faster reaction can identify a changing price pattern earlier, but also reacts to short-lived fluctuations. Price repeatedly crossing an EMA may reflect a range rather than a series of useful opportunities. Combining fast and slow averages does not remove their shared reliance on historical prices. Consider the environment, execution costs and intended holding period before treating a crossover as a decision rule.
Specify use and failure conditions
An EMA can be used as a descriptive trend filter or as one component of a more complete research framework. Define what would invalidate the interpretation and how trades would be sized before testing. Compare performance across independent periods and changing volatility. FYLU's article does not offer an EMA trading bot or an optimized setting; it explains how to examine the indicator's assumptions and limitations.
