Understanding commodity markets

Physical goods and contracts linked to them can create very different exposures.

Educational guideSeptember 2026

Goods, grades and locations

Commodities include physical goods such as energy products, metals and agricultural output. A usable market description needs more than the commodity's name: quality, delivery location and timing can all affect value. Two prices may differ because they refer to different grades or places rather than an obvious trading opportunity. Production, consumption, transport and inventories help explain the practical conditions behind a quoted price and the cost of moving goods between markets.

Ways to obtain exposure

Exposure can come through physical ownership, a business connected to the commodity, a fund or a derivative. Futures and forwards specify obligations for a later date, while options create different rights and obligations. These structures can react differently to the same change in the cash commodity price. Read settlement, expiry and rollover terms before assuming a product simply follows the price you see in a news headline or a spot chart.

Risks beyond direction

Weather, geopolitical events, storage constraints and supply disruptions can change commodity prices quickly. Derivatives add contract and margin considerations, while physical ownership can add storage and delivery costs. A contract approaching expiry may behave differently from a later one. Before studying a strategy, identify the exact exposure and how its value is calculated. FYLU's educational discussion does not confirm that physical delivery, storage or commodity trading is available through its current site.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
