Glossary entry
An area or mountain chart plots a sequence of values as a line and fills the space beneath it. In market displays it commonly uses closing or sampled prices, emphasizing the overall path across time. The filled shape is a presentation choice and does not add information about each period's open, high, or low.
Illustrative example
An area chart of daily closing prices can show a month's broad rise, while hiding a sharp intraday fall that recovered before the close.
What to consider
Check the sampling interval and vertical scale. A smooth shaded shape can conceal volatility and does not measure trading volume.
