Glossary entry
The bid is a price a buyer is willing to pay for an instrument. A market display often highlights the highest available bid alongside the quantity offered at that price. Someone selling immediately generally trades against available bids, while a limit sell order can specify a higher minimum acceptable price.
Illustrative example
A quote shows a bid of 99 for 50 units. Selling 80 units may involve lower bid levels for the remaining 30 units.
What to consider
The best bid applies only to available quantity at that moment. It is not a guaranteed price for every order.
