Glossary entry
The DAX follows 40 large companies listed on the regulated market of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange that meet its eligibility rules. It provides a reference for major German equities, although constituents may earn revenue worldwide. DAX versions differ: the frequently quoted performance index incorporates reinvested dividends, while a price index excludes them.
Illustrative example
Comparing a DAX performance chart with another index's price-only chart can mix different return measures because one includes reinvested distributions and the other does not.
What to consider
Identify the index version, currency, and measurement period before comparing results. German listing does not mean purely German business exposure.
