Glossary entry
A day order is valid for the trading session specified when it is submitted and generally expires if unfilled by that session's end. It can carry a limit price or other conditions. Regular and extended sessions may be treated separately, and an instruction entered after the market closes may apply to the next eligible session.
Illustrative example
A buy limit submitted for today's regular session receives no fill. It expires at the session boundary rather than automatically waiting throughout the next day.
What to consider
Confirm the relevant session and cutoff time. A day order may not remain active in evening or other extended trading.
