Financial instrument

Educational guideSeptember 2026

Glossary entry

A financial instrument is a contract or claim that creates financial rights and obligations, such as a share, bond, fund unit, or derivative. Instruments differ in ownership, repayment priority, cash flows, maturity, and transferability. Understanding the legal structure is essential because products referencing the same asset can expose investors to different counterparties and loss mechanisms.

Illustrative example

A company share conveys an ownership interest, while its bond represents a debt claim. Both relate to the same business but have different rights and payments.

What to consider

A familiar underlying name does not make two products equivalent. Read the instrument's terms, payoff structure, costs, and issuer obligations.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
