Glossary entry

Fundamental analysis studies the economic and financial factors that may influence an asset's value. For shares, these can include earnings, cash flow, debt, competition, and valuation; for currencies or commodities, interest rates and supply-demand conditions may matter more. The analysis connects assumptions to an estimated value or outlook rather than relying only on past price patterns.

Illustrative example

An analyst compares a company's cash generation, debt obligations, and competitive position before estimating a range of values under different growth and margin assumptions.

What to consider

Reasonable forecasts can still be wrong. Check accounting quality, assumptions, and valuation sensitivity instead of treating a single estimate as certain.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
