Good-till-canceled (GTC) order

Educational guideSeptember 2026

Glossary entry

A good-till-canceled order remains open beyond a single session until it is filled, canceled, or reaches a broker or venue's maximum permitted duration. The label does not necessarily mean unlimited life or activity in every trading session. Corporate actions and other events can also affect an order's status or terms.

Illustrative example

An investor leaves a limit order open for several sessions with GTC duration. It can execute later when the market reaches eligible prices and quantity is available.

What to consider

Review old orders after market changes or corporate events. Confirm the broker's expiry policy and whether extended sessions are included.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
