Glossary entry
An ISIN is a 12-character identifier assigned to a financial instrument under the ISO 6166 standard. It supports consistent identification across systems and countries, combining a prefix, an identifying sequence, and a check digit. An ISIN identifies the instrument rather than a particular trading venue, price quotation, or investor account.
Illustrative example
A bond can trade through several dealers while retaining the same ISIN. Matching that identifier helps distinguish it from another bond issued by the same company.
What to consider
An ISIN is an identification code, not evidence of investment quality, regulatory approval, or a guarantee that a seller is legitimate.
General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
