Glossary entry
Market depth describes the buying and selling quantities available across different price levels, beyond the best bid and ask. It helps assess how a proposed order might move through available liquidity. Depth is venue-specific and time-sensitive, and displayed quantities may exclude hidden orders or interest resting in other markets.
Illustrative example
A market buy for 500 units finds only 100 at the best ask. The remaining quantity may trade at higher levels shown in the depth display.
What to consider
Visible depth can change immediately. Do not treat a snapshot as a guarantee of future execution price or available quantity.
