Glossary entry
Nasdaq can refer to the financial technology and exchange group or, more specifically, the Nasdaq Stock Market where securities are listed and traded. It is also informally used for indexes associated with the name. Distinguishing the company, the marketplace, and an index prevents confusion when interpreting news, quotations, or investment products.
Illustrative example
A headline saying Nasdaq rose may refer to an index, while a company announcing a Nasdaq listing is referring to the market where its shares will trade.
What to consider
Check the full name and ticker in a quotation. An exchange operator's shares and a Nasdaq-linked fund represent different investments.
