Pending order

Educational guideSeptember 2026

Glossary entry

A pending order is an instruction that has not yet been fully executed and is waiting for its conditions or processing steps to be satisfied. In trading discussions, the term often refers to resting limit orders or conditional stop orders. The precise status depends on the platform, venue, and order type.

Illustrative example

An investor places a buy limit below the current ask. The order remains pending until eligible selling interest appears, its time limit expires, or it is canceled.

What to consider

Pending does not mean guaranteed execution. Verify order status and cancellation confirmation before submitting a replacement that could duplicate exposure.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
