Glossary entry
A portfolio is the collection of investments held by an individual, institution, or account. Its behavior depends on position sizes, asset characteristics, and relationships between holdings. Assessing the collection as a whole reveals concentration, liquidity needs, and overall risk that may not be apparent when each security is reviewed on its own.
Illustrative example
A portfolio contains shares, bonds, and cash. A change in one holding matters in proportion to its weight and how it interacts with other exposures.
What to consider
Count exposures across accounts when relevant. Several individually reasonable investments can combine into an unexpectedly concentrated or illiquid overall portfolio.
