Glossary entry
A quote states a price at which an instrument may be bought or sold, usually showing a bid and an ask. It can also refer to a reported last trade. The instrument, market, time, currency, and quoted quantity matter because two displayed prices may describe different trading conditions.
Illustrative example
A screen shows a bid of 49.90 and an ask of 50.10 for a share. Buying immediately would normally interact with the ask.
What to consider
A displayed quote can change before execution. Check its timestamp and whether the price is indicative, delayed, or executable.
