Glossary entry
A ticker symbol is a short code used to identify a traded security on a particular market or data system. It helps locate quotes, news, and orders, but may not uniquely identify an instrument worldwide. Listings, share classes, and currencies can differ, and a symbol may change after a company event.
Illustrative example
The same company can have an ordinary share in its home market and a depositary receipt elsewhere, each with a different symbol and trading currency.
What to consider
Verify the issuer, exchange, share class, and currency before trading. Similar symbols can refer to completely different securities or products.
