Glossary entry
A transaction is an agreed exchange of an asset, financial instrument, or payment between parties. In securities trading, execution establishes the trade terms, while clearing and settlement handle obligations and final delivery. Trade date and settlement date may differ, and the confirmation records important details such as quantity, price, charges, and counterparties or intermediaries.
Illustrative example
A share purchase executes today, but cash and securities transfer according to the market's settlement schedule. The execution confirmation records the agreed price and quantity.
What to consider
Check confirmations promptly for errors. A completed order does not necessarily mean settlement has finished or sale proceeds are immediately withdrawable.
