Glossary entry

An underlying asset is the reference on which a derivative's value or contractual payoff depends. It may be a share, bond, commodity, currency, or another financial reference such as an index. Owning the derivative does not necessarily provide ownership rights in the underlying, and settlement can involve cash rather than delivery.

Illustrative example

A call option on a company's shares refers to those shares as its underlying. The option price also responds to time remaining and volatility.

What to consider

Read the contract specification. Exposure to an underlying does not automatically include dividends, voting rights, or the ability to take delivery.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
