A practical guide to commodities

Use a contract checklist to compare physical, fund and derivative commodity exposure.

Educational guideSeptember 2026

Select the route to exposure

Begin by deciding whether the objective involves physical use, long-term financial exposure or a short-term hedge. Physical metal, a producer's shares, a commodity fund and a future respond to different factors. A mining company's operating costs can rise even when metal prices rise. Write down the instrument's economic link to the commodity rather than treating every product with the same commodity name as equivalent.

Build a specification sheet

Record the benchmark, quantity per contract, quote currency, minimum price increment, expiry and settlement mechanism. For a hypothetical contract representing 100 units, a price move of one currency unit changes notional value by 100 before other adjustments. This basic calculation helps reveal the size of exposure. Also identify holidays, trading breaks and the deadline for avoiding unwanted delivery or a forced closeout.

Map the relevant events

Commodity analysis requires an event calendar suited to the product: inventory releases, harvest reports, production meetings or weather developments may matter. Distinguish a surprise in new information from a level the market already expected. Test how disruption at a delivery location could affect the chosen benchmark. A broad economic narrative alone may miss the logistical constraints that determine an individual contract's price.

Evaluate the holding period

The intended holding period determines whether financing, storage or contract rolls become material. Compare a position's expected cost under different curve shapes and volatile market conditions. Use scenarios rather than a single optimistic price target. FYLU's guide is a learning resource; actual contracts, margin limits, fees and settlement responsibilities must be published in operator-approved terms before any commodity transaction service can be evaluated.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
