Market guides

A practical guide to ETFs

Compare a fund’s objective, holdings, trading price, expenses and structural risks.

Read the fund objective

An exchange-traded fund pools assets under a stated investment objective and has shares that trade in the market. Some seek to track an index, while others use active management. Read the prospectus to identify the strategy, permitted holdings and principal risks. The ETF label alone does not establish diversification, low risk or a particular tax treatment, and other exchange-traded products may have materially different structures.

Holdings and concentration

Look through the fund to its holdings, sector weights, geographic exposure and largest positions. Two ETFs can overlap substantially even if their names suggest different themes. Derivative use, securities lending and concentrated mandates may add risks beyond a simple basket of shares. Review both the investment policy and recent portfolio information, recognizing that holdings can change and that a disclosure may describe an earlier date.

Price and fund value

ETF shares trade at market prices that can differ from net asset value. Spreads and liquidity affect entry and exit costs, particularly when underlying markets are closed or disrupted. A limit order can help define an acceptable price, but may not execute. Review the relevant trading session and available quotes rather than assuming that an exchange listing always provides a narrow spread or immediate liquidity.

Assess the full cost

Fund expenses reduce assets over time, while dealing charges, spreads and currency conversion can add costs to a particular transaction. Compare products on a consistent holding period and exposure basis. Read special objectives carefully, especially for leveraged or inverse strategies. FYLU's guide is educational; actual ETF dealing, custody, eligible exchanges and account terms need approved provider documentation before they can be described as available services.

General information, not a personal recommendation. Product availability, rights, and obligations are determined by the relevant provider, jurisdiction, and approved agreements.
